Many people who don't know Lincolnshire think of it as a flat, boring place, well off the beaten track. Both of these ideas are misconceived. Far from being off the beaten track it is very accessible from the midlands and beyond. Because Lincolnshire is the second largest county in England it does take time to get around it; but its very size is an asset since its boundaries contain so much diversity. Its true that the fenlands are very flat indeed, but this flatness gives them their own distinctive character. It should be noted too that the fens, although important, form only a minor part of the Lincolnshire landscape. The Linconshire Wolds, which were designated as an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" in 1973, form another distinctive region. These rolling, undulating, hills form a delightful contrast to the fens. Miles of country lanes can be found in the Wolds which, even today, are largely free of the motor car. In Lincolnshire as a whole there are many villages and small towns that have defied the scourge of modern development. Even when they are not especially beautiful they have a nostalgic charm - a reminder of an earlier England and a slower pace of life.
