As cathedrals go, some connoisseurs consider Lincoln to be the finest in England, and some would go even further to argue that it is the best in Europe. Be that as it may it is certainly a very fine building which ranks in the highest class. Its attractions are enhanced by its position on a limestone ridge which makes it visible for miles around. Its visibility is increased by its central tower, which is one of the tallest of the Middle Ages in England - only Boston Stump is higher.
Most of the present cathedral was built in the first 80 years of the 13th century. It succeeded a Norman cathedral which was largely destroyed by an earthquake on 15 April 1185.
